The Basics Of Intruder Alarm Protection Systems From State Digital Security

By : Antony Christie

Security at the family home is an all too common issue that is often ignored in favour of the latest home comforts or luxuries. However, installing a basic home security system (e.g. A burglar alarm) is a lot less harrowing than having your home burgled and dealing with lost sentimental items that are irreplaceable. Research shows that burglars will usually look for soft targets with few deterrents.

Whilst not replacing any advice of a professional security surveyor or system designer, this article does explain the basics of intruder alarm protection systems and should help you gain an understanding of the area.

State Digital Security’s own research has shown that the best option for use in protecting a family home is more often that not, by using trap protection. Trap Protection is an excellent strategy for protecting a property without the need of fitting expensive sensors in every room in the home.

A statistical fact is that most burglars will break in at the rear of a property, and rarely at the front of a house. Burglars are also likely to head straight for the master bedroom. It is often sufficiently adequate to fit sensors in the rear rooms of the house and the hallway. The kitchen is not usually recommended for Passive Infra-Red (PIR) as the temperature fluctuations can make the area unstable due to the use of ovens, washing machines, fridges etc) and rarely contain smaller items of high value.

State Digital Security’s vast experience (over 35 years) has shown that dual technology detectors are also not recommended for use in the kitchen, as the microwave motion sensor detects even the slightest movement through thin walls and glass. Dual technology sensors are sensitive enough to be triggered by water moving through pipes!

A Trap Protection strategy is recommended for many reasons. Firstly to reduce the risk of false alarms, the most detectors that are in place the more potential there is for a false alarm. All intruder detectors can occasionally trigger a false alarm. Secondly, is that in a move to reduce the number of false alarms police will only attend a bell alarm if it is confirmed either by yourself or someone else that a burglary is actually in progress.

Another important aspect of recommending a Trap Protection Strategy is a reduction in cost to the home owner. Using a good quality sensor in each room would make the system expensive.

External alarm boxes will also act as a deterrent, as burglars will not know whether it is a bell system or monitored by an ARC who will alert Police. Burglars will usually take the easiest option and look for a house without an alarm. However, it is important that your alarm system is installed by an approved or recognised company as most burglars will recognise a DIY system and see this as less of a deterrent. A free survey will highlight the best form of action to take.

The value of a professional burglar alarm is immense. The police say that most burglars are opportunistic and look for the easiest and weakest target available. A professional alarm system should make the burglars’ job very hard and act as a deterrent by being in place.

Burglaries are unfortunately all too common and upsetting and in fact most of us know someone who has suffered as a result of a break-in. In fact you are more likely to be burgled if you have been burgled before. It is highly recommended that you take preventative measures. One of the most common reasons for getting a burglary alarm is that someone has already been burgled, a case of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.

State Digital Security as the Top security installer on the South Coast of England uses a combination of detection devices. The most popular being;

  • PIR (Passive Infra-Red) Detectors,
  • Magnetic Red Contacts,
  • Infra-Red Beams,
  • Pressure Pads,
  • Breaking Glass Detectors,
  • Case Wiring,
  • Vibration Detectors,
  • Dual Technology Sensors (sensors combining PIR with Microwave or Ultrasonic detection).

A monitored burglar alarm system sends a signal to an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) in the event of an alarm, which in turn is passed on to the Police. However, not all monitored alarms passed to the Police will receive a Police response since ACPO (the Association of Chief Police Officers) put a policy in place to limit the number of false alarms the Police force attend (ask us for more details).
